Subaru Forester’s EyeSight System & Other Safety Features

The Subaru Forester features a number of safety systems and driver assist features that keep drivers and their passengers safe during long or short travels.

In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the Forester its highest five-star safety rating as a result of its performance on side, frontal, and rollover crash tests. Plus, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety recognized the Forester by naming it a Top Safety Pick after it achieved the highest score of “Good” in each of five crash tests.

The Forester features standard safety systems that include traction control, electronic stability control, brake assist and anti-lock brakes, and a suite of five airbags. A rearview camera is also standard, with visibility on the user-friendly 6.2-inch touchscreen.

Many of the key driver-assist and safety systems that resulted in the Subaru Forester receiving such high accolades from industry safety experts are included in what Subaru calls their EyeSight safety system. Two full-color cameras are installed near the rearview mirror of the vehicle. They don’t interfere with the driver’s line of vision, but they scan the road around and in front of the vehicle to anticipate dangers that could result in a collision.  As part of the system, Pre-Collision Throttle Management reduces engine power to help avoid contact with objects that have been detected and determined to be in a position that may cause them to be hit by the Forester, thus avoiding or mitigating any damage. Pre-Collision Braking alerts the driver and applies the brakes automatically if the possibility of a front-on collision is detected. Lane Keep Assist and Sway Warning monitors the vehicle’s position both in the lane of travel and on the road in general and takes corrective action if swaying is detected. Finally, Adaptive Cruise Control maintains a safe and consistent distance from the vehicles ahead of the Forester while cruise control is in use, eliminating the need for the driver to constantly have to adjust their speed. Blind Spot Monitoring, rear automatic braking, automatic high beam assist, and rear cross traffic alert are other safety systems included with the Subaru Forester.
